4-Bed Bunk Accommodation Units for Onboard Marine Use
Crocodile Containers completed four custom accommodation containers for a marine project, turning standard 40ft shipping containers into practical onboard sleeping and bathroom facilities for crew.
Each unit was designed with four separate bunk bedrooms and two shared bathrooms, accommodating up to eight people per container. Across the four completed units, the project provides sleeping accommodation for up to 32 people.
After completion, the containers were delivered onboard and positioned together to form a dedicated crew accommodation area — turning part of the ship’s deck into a practical living space for up to 32 people.
From 40ft Shipping Containers to Onboard Crew Accommodation
This project started with four 40ft shipping containers and a clear purpose: create functional accommodation for personnel who would be living and working onboard.
Rather than creating one large communal sleeping area, each container was divided into smaller bedrooms, with bathroom facilities incorporated within the same unit.
The result was a modular container accommodation setup that could be installed directly onboard while providing crew members with the everyday facilities they need to sleep, rest and get ready for work.
The completed project includes:
- 4 × custom accommodation containers
- 16 separate bedrooms
- 16 bunk beds
- 8 shared bathrooms
- Sleeping capacity for up to 32 people
Inside Each Accommodation Container
A major part of the project was making good use of the available space inside each shipping container without turning the bedrooms into one large shared bunk room.
Each container instead provides four individual bedrooms, with one bathroom shared between every two rooms.
Four Separate Bunk Bedrooms
Each bedroom is designed for two people and includes the key features required for day-to-day onboard accommodation.
Inside each bedroom:
- Bunk bed for two people
- Personal storage lockers
- Bed shelving
- Bed lights / internal lighting
- Window
- Air-conditioning
- Hand basin & mirror
- Seperate bedroom access
This gives crew members their own defined sleeping area while still allowing up to eight people to be accommodated within a single container.
The combination of bunk beds and built-in storage also helps keep the room practical without taking up unnecessary floor space.
Two Shared Bathrooms
Every two bedrooms are connected to a shared bathroom, resulting in two bathrooms within each accommodation container.
Each bathroom includes:
- Toilet
- Shower
- Shower curtain
- Vanity
- Mirror
- Ventilation fan
- Door access from both bedrooms.
By incorporating the bathrooms directly into the unit, sleeping and bathroom facilities remain together rather than requiring separate external amenities elsewhere onboard. For personnel staying on the ship, this creates a much more practical day-to-day setup.
A Complete Container Accommodation Setup
The project becomes much easier to understand once the units are seen in their final location.
After leaving our workshop, all four accommodation containers were delivered onto the ship and positioned alongside each other on deck.
The finished installation creates a dedicated accommodation area, with the containers facing a central walkway that provides access to the individual bedrooms.
This is where shipping container accommodation becomes particularly useful for projects with limited or specialised spaces.
Instead of trying to construct one large permanent accommodation building, individual container units can be built off-site and then positioned together to form a larger accommodation setup.
For this project, just four units provide sleeping and bathroom facilities for up to 32 people.
Built for the People Using It Every Day
The crew staying onboard need more than somewhere to put a bunk bed.
They need somewhere to sleep, store their belongings, cool the room, access lighting and use bathroom facilities as part of their everyday routine.
